There's nothing quite like spreading perfectly soft butter onto fresh bread, and a butter bell is a simple, traditional way to keep it that way without refrigeration.

Designed to store butter at room temperature, the butter is packed into the lid while a small amount of cold water sits in the base. When the lid is inverted, the water creates an airtight seal that helps keep the butter fresh, soft, and ready to spread for weeks.

Each butter bell is thrown by hand in my studio and reduction fired in my gas kiln using my own glazes, making every piece unique. Practical enough for everyday use and beautiful enough to leave on the table, it's a timeless addition to any kitchen.

How to use

  • Soften your butter and firmly pack it into the lid, removing any air pockets.
  • Pour around 1–2cm of cold water into the base.
  • Place the butter-filled lid into the base so the rim sits below the water line, creating an airtight seal.
  • Keep the butter bell out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
  • Change the water every 2–3 days to keep the butter fresh.

Your butter will remain soft, spreadable, and ready whenever you need it—perfect for fresh bread, toast, and baking.
